“GREATEST INCUBUS”
System of Examinations PROFESSOR CRITICAL Strong criticism of the examination system in the Dominion was levelled by Professor W. H. • Gould, speaking at the breaking-up ceremony of the Hutt Valley High School yesterday. “The greatest incubus of true development in this country is the absurd examination system we have developed,” he declared. “It almost seems as if one-half of New Zealand is examining the other. Examinations have their place, but not the high place we have been apt to think.” Professor Gould commended the report of the principal, Mr. H. P. Kidson, in which he stated that he hoped neither parents nor board would expect the schools to become close crammers for examinations. The school could perhaps win bursaries, but it would be at the cost of narrowed and warped minds.
“One feels that because of the fetish of examinations, some of the finest minds in the country have been narrowed or warped,” concluded the professor.
