UNIVERSITY CHAIRS

j Auckland AppointmentsBy Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, December 12. The Chair .of History at Auckland University College is to be filled next year by Dr. James Rutherford, at present on the staff of University College, Southampton, England. The appointment was made at a meeting of the Auckland University College Council, Mr. O. W. de Kiewiet, who was appointed to the Chair last month, having Intimated through the Universities Bureau of the British Empire that he was compelled to withdraw his application. Mr. Rutherford is 27 years of age, and graduated-in 1926 at Armstrong College, Newcastle, in the University of Durham, with first-class honours in modern history. He won a post graduate and a research scholarship, and also a fellowship which enabled •him to study for tjvo years at the University of Michigan. He also received another special fellowship which allowed him to complete his Ph.D. Degree at Michigan In 1928. A year later he received his Master of Arts degree in the University of Durham. Since September, 1928, Mr. Rutherford has been lecturer in history at University College, Southampton. His special field is colonial history and constitutional law. He has conducted research work into the South'African Federal movement, and also has edited a collection of Tudor and Stuart papers which recently appeared in book form. According to advice received by the council, Mr. Rutherford hopes to arrive in Auckland early next March. Advice was aldo received through the Universities Bureau that Messrs. H. ,G. Forder and 0. G. Cooper had accepted their appointments to the respective Chairs of Mathematics and Classics, and they are expected to arrive in Auckland next February. Acceptance of his appointment to the Chair of English was received from Mr, W. A. Sewell.
