The continued absence of rain is particularly noticeable in the Tararuas at present,' report trampers. The tracks are very dry and most of the large mudholes are hard and in some places the tracks are cracked through want of rain. Some of ‘lie smaller > streams where water can usually be obtained have such a small flow that it is now impossible to get sufficient even for a drink. Some of the ferns which require a considerable amount of water are suffering from lack of rain and in some cases are dying.
