QUOTA ON CHEESE
Effect in New Zealand RESTRICTION UNDESIRABLE London, December 1. The “Manchester Guardian.” dealing with Empire trade, says that the more recent cry "Justice for the British barmer” grows increasingly incompatible with Britain’s pressure on New Zealand farmers to consent to a voluntary cheese quota. The Milk Marketing Board s scheme may be endangered if a relatively high price for British cheese is not obtained, but colonial cheese is an important item in working-class diet owing to its cheapness. A restriction of New Zealand imports is therefore undesirable. It would also so shake Np?' v Zealand s economic life as to mean an end of immigration. It may even lead to ultimate debt default.
