Christchurch Tramway Board Poll SEVEN SEATS OUT OF NINE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, December 1. The final figures, declared this morning. -show that the Labour Party gained a sweeping and unexpected victory in the Christchurch Tramway Board election, winning seven out of the nine seats. Only two members of the old board, Mrs. E. R. McCombs, M.P. (Labour) and Mr. W. J. Walter (Independent) were re-elected, and the only Citizens’ Association representative on the new board is Mr. C. E. Jones. On the old board there was only one Labour representative. There was a larger poll than usual. The new Labour members are the Rev. J. K. Archer, Messrs. E. Parlane, G. Manning, J. Mathison, E. J. Howard, M.P., and G. T. Thurston. Mr. Mathison was president of the old Tramways Union, which was concerned in last year’s strike. Sitting members who were defeated were Messrs. G. T. Booth (chairman), E. H. Andrews, W. Hayward (Citizens’ Association), and A. A. McLachlan (Independent). Three members of the old board did not seek re-elec-tion. The policy of the old board regarding the strike dominated the campaign. The election was the keenest, in the history of the board, aud twice as many votes were recorded as at the election three years ago. nearly 20,000 votes being cast in the central sub-district alone, which elected four Labour and one Citizens’ candidate. DECISION DEFERRED Tram Fares in Auckland By Telegraph.—Press Association, Auckland, December 1. The Auckland Transport Board today decided to defer decision on a proposal to revert to penny sections and a maximum fare of 4d until the return of the chairman from England, as it would mean a reversal of policy.
