SHARP REJOINDER

San Jose Lynching EX-PRESIDENT HOOVER Controversy With Mr. Rolph BONUS ARMY INCIDENT Ey Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright (Received December 1, 7 p.m.) San Francisco, November 30. Mr. Herbert Hoover has entered the San Jose lynching controversy with a sharp direct exchange between himself and the Governor of California. Mr. J. Rolph. Yesterday the former President signed a joint statement with a number of educationists and civic leaders at his home at Palo Alto condemning Mr. Ralph’s stand. To-day Mr. Rolph said: "I deplore the use of troops against our own people. Look at the mess we got into when our troops were called out at Washington against the bonus marchers.” — , This has reference to Mr. Hoover s eviction of the war veterans in the summer of 1932, and drew a sharp counter-statement from Mr. Hoover accusing Mr. Rolph of “gross ignorance of the facts.” and pointing out that no one was shot or otherwise in-

jured. The calling of troops to Washington was done to prevent further bloodshed.
