SUGGESTION MADE
Reform of Film Censorship
WELLINGTON PRINCIPALS
In a letter received by the Board of Governors of the Wellington Colleges yesterday, the principals of the institutions under its control expressed their views on film censorship in New Zealand. The letter was accompanied by the circular from the heads of secondary schools in Auckland, which has been sent to many educational authorities, and which urges reform of the censorship. The' Wellington principals asked the board to support the Auckland resolution, but the members of the board did not discuss the subject and the letter and the circular were “received.”
After commenting on the disadvantages of the present system of censorship the letter stated: — “What we should aim at in this country and what is being attempted in England is a national film institute. Such an institute, which would be a voluntary organisation, would work in conjunction with the censorship committee to supply true precis and opinions on pictures and advise children on their film-going, just as we now do on their reading.”
