WHO WAS MARCUS AURELIUS?
(Born Rome, April 26, 121 A.D. Died
Vienna, March 17, 180.)
One of the noblest of the Roman emperors, his name originally was Marcus Auuius Verus. He was adopted by Antoninus Pius, Hadrian’s successor, and eventually succeeded to the throne. He was more philosopher than warrior. Though hating war ho became at the call of duty a great captain. His immortal Meditations, one of the most remarkable books In the Greek language, were never intended for any eye but his own. They represent the thoughts and feelings of a man of singularly pure heart and noble mind. He aimed at the highest standard of life of which he could conceive, and lived up to that standard.
