BIRD PROTECTION
Suggestions to Government During a discussion at yesterday’s meeting of the New Zealand Native Bird Protect ion Society on the desirability of legislation dealing with collectors’ permits being put into force, it was agreed to forward the following suggestions to the Department of Internal Affairs: (1) Every collector at tlie expiration of his permit should forthwith furnish to the Department a solemn declaration setting out the species and numbers of birds, animals, or eggs that were finally secured by him. (2) The particular scientific purposes for which the collection was desired should be stated. (3) All collections of birds, eggs, or nests should be registered with the Department. (4) All orders from foreign museums, for specimens should be fulfilled by the Government. In view of the fact that picnic parties have been given permission to camp ou Kapiti Island and other bird sanctuaries, it. was agreed to recommend to the Lauds Department that, jiermits be issued only to persons definitely interested iu botany, ornithology. ichthyology or similar subjects. Parties, it was considered, should be limited in number, so that tlie caretaker could keep them under observation.
