Speeds in excess of 50 miles an hour are anticipated at this year’s Masport Cup race for the speedboat championship of New Zealand, to be run in Picton harbour on January 22, Wellington’s Anniversary Day. Jelo, with which the cup was won at Auckland last year, has been remodelled and will be renamed. It should be capable of 55 miles an hour. Another local boat is Mr. John Brownlee’s Pelorus Jack Senior, which is also expected to reach fifty miles’ per hour. Mr. F. Freeman, Wanganui, has challenged with a specially built boat, and it is also expected tha£ Auckland will be represented, while there is some talk of southern competitors, but nothing definite yet.
