TO BE DEPORTED

Stowaway on Maunganui PREVIOUS OFFENCES A list of charges in Australia was enumerated in the Police Court yesterday when Frederick Irvine, aged 32, described as a chemist, was charged with stowing away on the Maunganui at Sydney and with unlawfully landing in New Zealand, being a prohibited immigrant. On the first charge, the magistrate, Mr. W. F. Stilwell, imposed a fine of £5, in default one month’s imprisonment, accused to be removed by any boat sailing for Australia in the meantime. On the other .charge he was ordered to be detained in custody until he could be removed from the countr*’- A:. . Senior-Sergeant Dempsey ■ said that accused, who had been convicted in Auckland in 1930 for stowing away, had on this occasion surrendered himself when the Maunganui liad put out from Sydney. He arrived with one penny, and claimed to be a New Zealander who had lived for the past ten years in Australia. As a matter of fact, said Mr. Dempsey, accused was a native of England. - He had been charged in Sydney, Melbourne, and Victoria with offences including drunkenness, false pretences, aud wounding with intent to murder. In January of this year he was released from the Geelong Prison, where he had been confined for two years on a charge of unlawfully wounding a person. Accused also had given false names to the police. Mr. A. Paul, Collector of Customs, said that in view of accused’s record he would not be allowed to land in New Zealand in any circumstances. He asked for the deportation order, which the magistrate granted. Accused, who pleaded guilty, said he had nothing to say.
