THE RACING WORLD

WET DERBY DAY AT RICCARTON

Nightly Beats Red Manfred in Heavy Going 1 WELL-BACKED RUNNERS OFTEN BEATEN Croupier’s Surprise; Ramo Tabes Fendajton (By Teipgraph—-Special from “The Watcher. ) Christchurch, November G. Derby Day at Riccarton to-day was completely marred by bad weather, driving rain and a cold wind from the south maki e ' matters most unpleasant. v a-MclpHlv soft The track did not get very bad, but was decidedly and later heavy and, as a. result, some well-backed fancies cameto grief, the majority of the winners paying good prices. It woul I not be good judgment to declare any definite opinions <>» s form for future guidance. The winners were in P ract cases going so much better than their opponents at the finis that some of the merit for their success must be credited to ability to handle the going better. Particularly was this the case in t e finish of the Derby, with Nightly coming from well back to cut down the favourite, Red Manfred. Similarity, Croupier provided a double-figure surprise by running away from his held in the Criterion Handicap, while Ramo came right from the rear to win the Fendalton Handicap. The weather naturally affected the attendance, which was poor, and totalisator investments slumped, being f13,485/IU/-, compared with £16,592/10/- last year, a decrease of ±3107. . Considering it was one of the worst days for weather eyei experienced at Riccarton the results are much better than might have been expected. T _

Favourites Unplaced. Doiran and Flower ’ were favourites for the Highweight, but neither filled a place. Doiran did flatter his supporters entering, the straight, but Flower was always well back. Royal Sceptre made the pace from Elude, High Rank, and Doiran, the field stringing out, with Night Flyer last. Night Flyer made a fast run at the home turn to lead into the straight with Elude, from Royal Sceptre, High Rank and Doiran. Elude and Night Flyer drew away, the former asserting a decisive superiority in . the final stages. - Night■;g.uard. was a .popr'third." • High Rank fourth, then Doiran. and Flower. /• The first .two horses handled the going ■ :much- better than their opponents, who had no chance with them. Elude won 7 with a. lot in hand, but Night Flyer was badly ridden, being used up much too soon. Nightguard suffered interference . about five furlongs from home. He came on well agjin at the finish. and no doubt was unlucky. All three dividend payers are by Night Raid. W. Hogan, rider of Locksley In the opening event, was suspended for.the rest of , the meeting for: interference in the rtmning with Nightguard. ' ... . '. Bracket First and Second. .. j The bracketed pair, Wonderful and Queen of Song, took all the money in the two-year-old race, although they finished in the reverse order to expectations. Bodyline led to the straight from. Queen 1 1 of Song, Wonderful, Invoice, and Emissary, and Queen- of Song finished best to •win well. In a close finish for second •Wonderful jtret-huhg ori : to beat Invoice, with Master Reynard on the outer flying into fourth place,. then - Custodian .and Emissary. : The winner won convincingly, but Master Reynard and Emissary will both improve a lot. Owing to the bracket running first and second, they took all the place money, .which, dividend was better than the win price. ■ - Croupier on His Own. . The pitfalls that beset the path of backers were emphasised with the win of Croupier in the Criterion Handicap, due to his ability to handle soft ground. He led all the \way to win by three lengths, -nothing being able to. get near him in the straight. - . Irish Lancer; on the outer, -was slow to leave the barrier, going off four or five lengths last. Croupier showed out immediately, leading" with Cranford from Hurlirigham, and they quickly put daylight .■ between themselves and the bunch, the favourite, True Shaft, quickly going to the rear, being unable to hit out in'Tiie going. Irish Lancer had improved his position, on the home turn, the order into the straight being Croupier well clear of Cranford,.Hurlingbam, and Irish Lancer, with Spoon, moving forward. Morris, on Croupier, cast several anxious glances back at his opponents over the last furlong, but he had no need to worry, Croupier running home unchallenged. Irish Lancer was clear of Hurlingham for second with Spoon fourth and True Shaft next. Then came a gap to Cranford'and Great Star and another gap to Silver . Streak and Lordly Knight. Croupier always was a mudlark, and tp-day he made an exhibition of his field, never being challenged. Irish Lancer ran a sterling race after the start he got and was running on strongly with very little help from his rider. Hurlingham was the only other ever to look dangerous and ho did not run on. Nightly's Derby. Nightly scored a decisive win in the Derby over the favourite Red Manfred, getting up on the inner of the latter after lie had taken a clear lead and looked all over a winner. ■ Silvox, Nightly, and Epigram led the bunch out of the straight, Southdown whipping in. The pace was on early, but in the middle stages was patchy, the majority pulling hard. This caused quick changes in places at the mile post, Southdown going up into second place behind Silvox and Nightly dropping to the rear. Red Manfred continued to hold a handy position in third place. Silvox and Southdown led Red Manfred past the half mile and into the straight, with Nightly moving up. Red Manfred took the lead off Southdown and was well clear at the distance, but Nightly, coming with a good run on the inner, had drawn level with 100 yards to go, and the extra effort called on by both riders saw Nightly respond and win decisively, Red Manfred being unable to do any better. ■ Southdown was fully 40 yards away third, with Silvox fourth, then Passion Fruit and Epigram. Nightly won on his merits, proving the best stayer in the going, although possibly Red Manfred came just a bit too soon. However, Morris was left with little choice in, this respect. His mount floundered badly in the going several times, and, without detracting from the merit of Nightly’s win, the result, on a dry track, 1 is likely to be reversed. They outclassed the others on the day. Ramo from the Rear. Ramo won the Fendalton Handicap right from the rear, nothing having any chance Of withstanding his late run. Chrysology and The Smuggler went out clear of the bunch, which was headed bv Rocket, Shatter. Tout le Monde and Minerval. Tout le Monde moved up prominently entering the straight, but did not last long. Rocket and Minerval taking charge. Then Ramo put in a claim and won with a good deal in hand from Rocket. Minerval was a good third, with Tout le Monde a poor fourth. Then eame The Smuggler, Shatter, Eminent, and Chrysology. „ , Ramo won decisively. Rocket ran to form and Minerval is improving. Nothing else had any chance. Another Good Mudlark. Last Link put up a good performance to win' the hack seven, being well back

in the running to the straight. In addition he bad thrown his rider before the start and bolted to the scraping sheds. . Bon Tray," Knocklong, Grampian, Prostration, Top Rank and High Tor were always prominent, with the favourite, Worship, well back. High Tor tool; charge atf the false rail, ,where Prostration and Copyist were also going well and Worship was coming on the outer. High ' Tor led till the last few strides, where Last Link came to snatch victory on the post. Copyist was a good third. Worship fourth, and Knocklong and Prostration handy. Then there was a gap to a bunch headed by Bon Tray, k Sibella and Lady Zephyr. Last Link’s performance was impressive, although' he got a good run upon the rails. On the other hand, Worship was always forced to cover extra ground. Copyist ran a good race, Irostration also. * Decisive Victory. Mcprisant came away from his opponents as if they were anchored in the straight 'in the Epsom Handicap. Up to this stage White Doe had led and Argentic waa challenging. They had White Doe beaten at the false rail, but Meprisant galloped right away over the final stages for n very easy win Ranelagh finished well for third, with White Doe fourth and Miladi next. Miladi, the favourite, was never going well. The winner proved a champion mudlark. . Results in Detail MIDDLETON HANDICAP, of 180 sovs.; second 36 sovs., third 18 sovs. Nine furlongs. 3/3 .T, G. BAROSCOPE AGAIN Auckland Second Day EXAGGERATION WINS Every Favourite Beaten Dominion Special Service. Auckland, November 6. Rain in the morning rendered the course very heavy for the conclusion of the Auckland Racing Clubs meeting at Ellerslie to-day, when every favourite was beaten. An improvement in the weather resulted in a better attendance. Fairly heavy rain fell before the first race, but the weather then moderated, although there were occasional light showers during the afternoon. Totalisator investments were i 11,141, compared with £20,939 for the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £3795. The total fur the meeting was £33,583, compared with £4G.S4S/10/last year, a decrease of £13,262/10/-. There were no phciioniciuil dividends, tlie largest being less than double figures in the first race. Tavern Knight Succeeds. The three-year-old, Tavern Knight, won at a good price in the Normauby Handicap. Tavern Knight and Good Run were not well served by the start, but Tavern Knight was up bandy behind Supreme Ruler, Jewelled Girdle, Star Artist, and Holly Lu at the turn and finished well on the outside to score from Holly Lu. Jewelled Girdle, who ran about, in the straight, was a close third, and Good Run was fourth. The honours of the race were clearly with the winner, but Good Run. Jewelled Girdle, and Star Artist should all du better. Won With Saddle Slipped. The Manuknti Hurdles resolved itself into a duel between Wee Pat and Carlaris, who were in frant most of the way, and Carlaris prevailed only by a head. He may have won more easily only for his saddle slipping round in the run from the last fence and finishing up under his flanks. His.rider, C. Thomson, dismounted immediately on pulling up, but fortunately he lost none of his gear and weighed in “all correct.” Free Air was just a moderate third. Crtiachan and Coachman fell. The latter was up in the lead with Wee Pat and Carlaris when he went over at the second to last fence and was going well at the time. ' Exaggeration Decisively. Capably ridden by H. Wiggins, Exaggeration won tlie Epsom. Handicap running away. She was not. too well drawn at the post, but followed British ‘ Columbia, Tradesman and Fuse Moth into the straight and soon settled the opposition when asked for an effort. British Columbia and Puss Sloth both battled oil well to fill the minor places. Tradesman showed fine speed after being last away from the outside, but’the effort was too great, lie should be worth watching. Porotiti jumped out well, but soon drifted back. Baroscope’s Strong Finish. Baroscope scored, his fourth successive victory wjien he won the King Edward Memorial Handicap, which was a great race. After L’Allegro and Prince A al Juul made all the running to the turn they were joined by View Halloo, who went up very fast on the outside. Baroscope was then handy and he finished strongly to staff off Lord Vai, .who came home solidly from a rearward position. View Halloo was a good fourth and would have been harder to beat if lie had not made his run so soon. _ Red Sun was finishing on in fifth position, but was never really dangerous, Patutahi’s Steeplechase. Patutahi, having his third race over country, took charge before going up the hill the second time and was never afterward headed in the Onebunga Steeplechase, for which lie was fourth fancy on the win machine and paid a good-price. Kairuri and Valpeen made good showings to fill the minor places, and Riotous did well in his first attempt over country to finish fourth. The others were well beaten, although Zane Grey would probably have been in a place only for tailing' at the second to last fence, where he was running second. / Sirona Beats Two-year-olds. Gay Egypt was a good each-way favourite for the Musket Stakes, but the. best he could do was to finish fourth. Sirona jumped out in front and -cd all the way to win comfortably from Gallant Knight and Wahroonga, who deadheated for second. Gallant Knight was up with the winner at the turn, but he hung out badly, and finished under the judge’s box. Gay Egypt also prejudiced his chance by going "very wide nt tlie ■bend. Win at Second Start. The three-year-old, Expectancy, led practically all the way in the Hobson Handicap, and, although she ran about in the straight, scored nicely from Bugle Call and Allegretto. It was only Expectancy’s second start, but she did well to hold off Bugle Call, who went up to her at the turn. Al.v Aloney did best of the others, who gave no serious trouble. Expectancy is owned by Mr. T. Impey, who also wou with Exaggeration. Good in Heavy Going. Master Norval, fourth fancy each way. finished strongly to win the Liverpool Handicap from Kiltowyn and Wopdtiu. The winner was in the rear early, but moved up behind the pacemakers, Woodful and Senegal, at the turn, and ran on strongly at tlie end, once again demonstrating his ability to act well in heavy S Kiltowvn ran on gamely under pressure, and should do better under more favourable conditions. Senegal showed speed, but retired quickly in the straight. Results in Detail Bv Telegraph.— Press Association. NOR3IANIBY HANDICAP, of 200 sovs. One mile. 3/3 TAVERN KNIGHT, 8.0 car 8.01 ' (15. METROPOLITAN TROTS Field for New Zealand Cup REVIEW OF THE PROSPECTS (By “Overcheck.”) The Now Zealand Aletropolitan Trotting Club's meeting will be opened at Addington to-day, when New Zealand's premier handicap—the Cup—conics up for decision. Tlie Cup field is a very strong one, and the race promises to be of mi exciting character. The other races have also drawn large acceptances, and in each arc competing the best horses of their respective classes, so that a particularly interesting day's sport, is assured. The programme is as under: — SPRING HANDICAP, of 250 sovs.; on-, hoppled trotters; 3.32 class. Une mile and a half.

In the Spring Handicap Real Belle appears have a favourable opportunity of securing further honours. As a rule she is a quick beginner, and with the advantage of position on the rails she really receives from the back markers at least 12 yards more than appears on paper. Wah and Merce Bingen of those from 12 to 48 yards are likely to run well. The horses on GO yards are a particularly good lot, while Louis Bingen on 84 yards gives promise of being an outstanding performer this season. Garner did a particularly good trial a few days ago. and with Lough Guy is likely to be well supported. _ . . The public may decide in favour of Real Belle, Garner and Louis Bingen. EMPIRE HANDICAP, of 300 sovs.; 2.47 class. One mile and a quarter. Some Guy .... scr 12 rebep.) ... 36 Taxpayer .... scr Taxpayer and Blue Jlountain may be accorded most support of those on scratch in the Empire Handicap, and Avernus ot those on 12 yards. Eureka Boy is a smart sprinter, but at a difference of 12 yards reads rather close to Indianapolis. There wns little difference, between Taxpayer and Indianapolis as three-year-old's, and as the former has won each ot the two races he has contested this season it is evident that there is nothing wrong with his condition. All things considered Taxpayer is the likely fav-

ouritc, with good support also for Avernus and Indianapolis. N.Z. TROTTING CUP. of 1500 sovs.; 4.20 class. Two miles. Kingcraft .... scr Lindbergh ... 24 Royal Silk .... ser Red Shadow .. 24; Sir Guy scr Winckler .... 24 Free Advice .. 12 Satin King .... 24; Mountain Dell . 12 Koi I'Or 48 Glenrossie .... 24 Harold Logan . 72 After his winning effort at Wellington Royal Silk has come into the discussion concerning the Cup, and as be has already proved his ability to go two miles he must be considered to have a good chance. So far his bet»t time for the distance is -4.24 4-5, which was registered at Wellington, the year before last. Kingcraft does not make a strong appeal, but Sir Guy showed marked improvement last year and is sure to go a good race. Free Advice and Mountain Dell will be bracketed, and of the pair the form of the latter has been decidedly good. Her last success was registered at Addington in August, when she won from Sunny Morn and Glenrossie in 4.23 4-5. The latter was then conceding 24 yards, and is now preferred at a difference of only 12 yards. However, of the 24 yards division Red Shadow, Lindbergh and Satin King read best, though in the case of the latter there is a possibility that he may not be right at the top of his form. Harold Logan meets Hoi I’Or on 12 yards better terms than when he defeated him last year, and should again hold him safe. It is an open race, but. preference may be shown for the Royal Silk-Red Shadow bracket, Lindbergh and Satin King. YALD'HURST HANDICAP, of 500 sovs.; 4.30 class. Two miles.

It is a long time since Logan’s Pride won a race, and it would be pleasing to be able to record a success for him. Ono, however, cannot disregard form, and most support may be accorded Kcwpie’s Guy. Silver de Oro, and Vesuvius. The firstnamed raced well in the Cup Trial at Wellington, while Silver de Oro invariably races well. So far this season she has been only once out of a place in her four starts. Vesuvius was placed twice at Addington in August, going 4.21 3-5 when he finished second to Sunny Morn in the King Voyage Handicap. Of the others, Gold Tinge may carry most money. DOMINION HANDICAP, of 600 sovs.; unhoppled trotters; 4.36 class. Two miles.

The Dominion Handicap should provide a great contest. Of the three on scratch Louis Bingen will probably have the largest following, but he will be thoroughly tested by the horses he has now to compete against. Writer is a good sort and ran second to Nicoya at Addington in August when conceding the latter 12 yards. He now receives 24, but notwithstanding Nicoya will probably be preferred if the going is good. Todd Lonzia should be in better form now than in August, while Huon Voyage and Olive Nelson can be depended upon to go good races. The likely favourites are Louis Bingen, Huon Voyage, and Todd Lonzia. RICCARTON HANDICAP, of 300 sovs.;

Guy Denver was regarded by many as unlucky when he was defeated at New Brighton by Waress, who now is asked to concede 36 yards. On that form Guy Denver appears to hold a good chance in the Riccarton Handicap. Cloudy Range has a. record of 4.34 1-5 over two miles and should be capable of a good effort from 4.38. Girvan won at Addington in April in 4.26 1-5, and will probably be the popular fancy. . Pronto Bingen was twice placed at Addington in August over two miles, and may do best of those on 36 yards. Possibly the order of favouritism will be Girvan, Guy Denver, and Cloudy Range. VICTORIA HANDICAP,- of 350 sovs.; 4.35 class. Two miles. Bracken scr Raydus (incl. Ciro ser 12yds. pen.). 24 Gay Gordon .. scr Gunfire 24 Jolly Wave ... scr Master Roy ... 24 Kelp .scr Roddy 24 Manoeuvre .. scr Blue Mountain 36 Purser (incl. 12 John Jinks .. 36 yds. pen.) .. 12 Gj-and Canyon 48 Probationer . 12 Tactless (incl. Wrecker .... 12 12yds. pen.). 60 In the Victoria Handicap, Gay Gordon reads well on scratch. At Addington in August he was third to Blue Mountain and Indianapolis, going 4.26 4-5. Purser and Wrecker are a likely pair on 12 yards, while of' those further back Blue Mountain and Master Roy .are sure to find favour. Favouritism is likely to 'be shared by Gay Gordon, Wrecker, and Purser. HAGLEY HANDICAP, of 300 sovs.; 2.44 class. One mile and a quarter. Brent Zolock . ser Sunny Morn .. scr First Flight .» scr Royal Silk (incl. Great Logan ..scr 12yds. pen.). 24 Kewpie's Guy . scr Free Advice .. 24 Logan’s Pride . scr Wrackler 24 Mountain Dell scr Red Shadow .. 36 On Wellington form. Kewpie’s Guy, Mountain Dell and Red Shadow are sure to have plenty of support accorded them in the Hagley Handicap. On this occasion, however. Red Shadow may do better than he did at Wellington provided he does not incur a penalty as a result of the running of the Cup.. Mountain Dell may be installed favourite.
