SPORT ON SUNDAY

Palmerston Discusses Question DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, November 6. With a request that the council should not give permission for the conducting of organised sport on public playing areas, a large deputation representing various religious organisations of the city waited on the I’almer'ston North City Council to-night. The speakers for the deputation did not condemn the playing of sport on Sundays, but protested against organised and competitive sport on public areas, Several speakers said that competitive and organised sport would ultimately result in the loss of the Sabbath to workers and the introduction of the Continental Sabbath. A member of the Sunday School Union said that the introduction of competitive snort would deal a most severe blow to the Sunday schools of the city, which were doing such excellent work in preparing future citizens. He was of opinion that tlie question was one which was too great for the council to decide and should be decided by the i citizens. In answer tq a question, the presi- : dent of the Council of Christian Coni gregations, Mr. F. T. Vasey, said the council had been more than satisfied with the control of the reserves in the past, until it was noticed that competitive and organised games were creeping in. It was stated that the Council of Christian Congregations wished to have the present by-law in regard to Sunday sport given effect to. After the deputation had retired the council discussed the matter. Cr. G.. Tremaine moved that the previous decision of the reserves committee granting permission for Sunday cricket should be adopted. Cr. W. B. Cameron raised a point of order, that there was a by-law at present prohibiting Sunday play on reserves, whereupon Cr. Tremaine gave notice of motion that the by-law should be rescinded.
