SUNDAY CONCERT
Carnival Princess Effort POPULAR PERFORMERS An excellent entertainment to further the cause of the Community Services Princess, Miss Phyllis Oliver, in the National Confidence Carnival, was enjoyed by a large gathering in the Regent Theatre last evening. Selections by the band of the First Battalion, Wellington Regiment, and vocal and elocutionary numbers by popular artists! received well-earned applause. The chairman of the carnival executive, Mr. G. G. Stewart, and Mr. A. S. Wemyss, chairman of the Community Services committee, outlined the aims and objects of the carnival, and emphasised the need for the return of confidence, which would create employment and restore conditions to what they were before the depression. The object was a worthy one, and all should be pleased to assist in the carnival, whose proceeds were to go toward the Mayor’s fund for the alleviation of distress. . Mr. Stewart introduced Miss Oliver and Miss Eve Craddock (Transport and Power Princess), both of whom addressed the audience briefly, and thanked them for the interest they were taking. Probably the most popular of the performers were Miss Kathleen Ferris, who was particularly good in “Was It a Dream?” and Mr. W. Binet Brown, whose baritone solos, “Recruit” and “When the Sergeant-Major’s on Par ade,” were the best of his trio of songs. Miss Mabel Fiske, a Wanganui contralto was popular, as wore Miss Dorothy Seymour and Miss Nola Hyde in humorous recitations. Selections and marches by the band reflected great credit on that company, whose playing was thoroughly appreciated. The accompanist was Mr. Norman Izett. Quite a good response was made to the collections taken at the doors and in the hall.
