Dear Boys and Girls, — The cry of "Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, ~ rang fa my pars the other morning, too early I thought as I turned sleepily and yawned. “Have you a penny for the guy?” asked a plaintive voice outside my window. Had I? I wondered. “If you haven’t got a penny a ha’penny will do,” the voice continued. Frantically I searched —no, not a ha’penny could I find. In despair I threw a small sixpence into the hat held out for it, feeling guiltily that the small clink it -made could not hope to compare with the large, round ring of a copper penny. In return I was allowed a glimpse of a dark-clothed figure of uncertain shape, with an astonishingly ferocious expression and apologetic eyes. Before I could say “Good morning,” he was whisked away down the path ... a visitor who had arrived two days too soon! On Saturday the air will be sharp with the staccato crack of “throw-downs” and the fizz-bang of penny crackers. I can see busy people flinging more wood on to already enormous piles. Saturday is exciting for another reason, too, though this time only the Wellington League members will be able to share it. The Children’s Theatre Players are performing that most thrilling of all pantomimes, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” I believe there is a wonderful dancing cow and a fierce kind of giant who growls out, “Fee Fi Fo Fum” in a truly giantsome manner. There arc gnomes and gipsies and a frolicsome fairy who —but in a moment I shall be telling you all the secrets and that would not do at all. The winner of Inkling’s Crossword Puzzle Competition is Marjorie Slight, Marton, whose entry is published this week. Next place was gained by Audine Pickford, who sent a very jolly puzzle, and Jessie Graham, of Greytown, is very highly commended. Good-bye, League members, and may all your rockets go off with a bang! Ever so much love, from KIWI and INKLING.
