MEMORIAL TO FAMOUS PHYSICIAN.
A memorial to William Harvey, discoverer in 1616 of the circulation of the blood, is being erected at Hempstead, •near Saffron Walden, Essex, where he is buried. The church tower, which fell in 1882, is to be rebuilt for the purpose. . Harvey was physician to James 1 ano Charles T, a fact alluded to by Lord Dawson of Penn, physician to the present King, when he laid the foundation stone of the tower. When the original tower collapsed, the bulk of the stone and flint, as well as the bells, fell into the churchyard. They are being used again by the contractors. A sum of £3OOO has been raised, but to complete the work a further £2OOO is necesSir Eliab Harvey, a kinsman of William Harvey, captain of the Temeraire, chosen by Lord Nelson to be the supporting ship to the Victory, is also buried in the Harvey Chapel in Hempstead Church. Hempstead has another claim to fame, for in its church the highwayman Dick Turpin was christened. The register shows that his parents. John and Mary Turpin, gave their son the full name of Riehardus.
