Buried Treasure
The sea alone knows of the treasure buried Beneath these undulating mounds of surf;. The catastrophic casualties that hurried Ships to interment in the briny turf; And where white coral shafts mark coffered gold And chests of silver coins and precious stones; Where schools of dreams —and fishes —haunt the shoaled Disintegrating hulls, and bleaching bones. It knows and laughs in its gray sleeve at ghouls Who think to pry the heavy-lidded waves From barnacle-scaled vaults with man-made tools — To wrench time's rusted hasps; to loot old graves — And sets a guard of octopi thereunder Who throw a dark barrage about the plunder. ETHEL ROMIG FULLER.
