JOBS FOR TEACHERS

Scheme for Rationed Work NEED FOR PROTECTION Dominion Special Service. Masterton, November 3. Three members of the New'Zealand Educational Institute, Miss M. E. Magill, president, and Messrs. C. Robertson, treasurer, and 8- R. Ashbridge, secretary, addressed members of the Masterton branch of the institute at a meeting last evening on various matters concerning teachers. Teachers were not doing enough io make their work known, said Miss Magill, who added that they should endeavour to interest the public in educational work and boost education generally. Referring to the large number of teachers now unemployed, she said the executive had agreed to rationing for one year, but there was now a danger of that’system eating into the main system. Rationed teachers must be protected. The executive had asked that teachers affected by drop of school grade due to the exclusion of children of five years should be retained. but the Minister's reply gave nothing. She maintained that there was no security of tenure for an assistant. The Legislature had not realised the seriousness of the exclusion of the five-year-olds. Teachers’ pensions were dealt with at length by Mr. Robertson, and Mr. Ashbridge explained the conditions in which the executive was building up a fund to assist rationed and relieving teachers. He recommended teachers to give their assistance in that direction.
