Pacific Ocean Control (From “The Dominion,” November 3, 1008.) The Federal Prime Minister, Mr. Dea kin, considers it would be premature to pass an opinion on the Japanese proposal for a conference to discuss the question of the control of the Pacific Oeean, as it has not been put forward in a definite form.
Mr. R. Lemieux, Canadian PostmasterGeneral, has started for England to attend a conference of representatives of the Imperial and Colonial Governments, which the cable companies have summoned to discuss the suggestion of Mr. Henniker Seaton, M.P., that there should be a penny a word cable rate for the Empire. Mr. Lemieux has been empowered to support the movement to the utmost of his ability.
The Union Company’s new steamer Makura has arrived at Melbourne after a remarkably fast passage. She lowered the record from Durban with only seven of her eight boilers in use, covering the distance (5569 miles) in 13 days 20 hours, and averaging 16. S knots all the way.
After lying at the breastwork at Dampiers Bay. West Lyttelton, for several months, with the exception of a short spell in dock, the British Antarct'c expedition ship Nimrod hits 'been shifted by the tug tn a berth at No. 1 breastwork alongside No. 5. Harbour Board store. The little ship, which has had a very extensive and thorough overhaul, is now in splendid order, and looks very neat and trim mid elemi. There o now only one month to run before the Nimrod sets out from Lyttelton on her second voyage to Antarctica. Pho is to set sail from that port on December 1.
