Offences of Salesman

POLICE COURT CASES On three charges, which were of theft, conversion and false pretences, a salesman, Neville Eric Watkins, aged 21, was convicted in the Police Court yesterday by Mr, E. Page, S.M. Watkins was accused of stealing a. motor tire, valued at £lO, owned by G. P. Hatfield, of converting to his own use a £6B motor cycle, owned by H. Lucchesi, and of obtaining from P. Sadler two tires valued at £B/5/5, by false pretences/ Detective-Sergeant Revell said’ that on October G accused had approached a man named Lucchesi; who had a cycle to sei), and represented himself as a prospective buyer. Accused was given permission for a trial ride round a city block, but instead of completing the circuit he had ridden away to Levin. It was only after the police bad started extensive inquiries th,it the cyclo was returned. With regard to the other charges, accused bad approached Sadler and ordered the two. tires in his father’s name. They were then put on to a lorry to be taken to Levin, but accused had seized a chance that presented itself of taking them away and selling them. The theft of the other motor tire had been from a city carrying depot, -the tire being disposed of to a dealer. -

It was mentioned :that in July last accused had been admitted to twelve months’'' probation for theft. When asked by Mr. Page if he had anything to say he said he very much regretted what had happened and asked for a chance. The probation officer in the Court stated that he thought the accused was not worthy of another chance. Sentence was given on the first charge of six months’ imprisonment, and on the others accused was ordered • to come up for sentence if called upon within two years, Found on Premises “These four men were found at 8.30 o’clock last night on the premises dt 130 Taranaki Street. The place bad been left locked, but the police found the side door forced and the men inside the building. They were sitting on the floor taking part in a carousal, and there were empty beer and methylated spirits bottles about,” said SeniorSergeant Dempsey when four labourers —Edward Charles Cotter, aged 52, Robert William Mclntyre, 43, John Brien. 56, and Edward Adams, SG, were charged with being found on the premises.

.'The case against Cotter was adjourned for a week, and it was stated that he was in hospital. Mclntyre had been before the Court a number of times previously for offences allied to drunkenness, the police stated. Breen had appeared twice before this year for drunkenness, and Adams bad been before the Court, for two breaches of the Licensing Act. Mclntyre was convicted aud sentenced to three mouths’ imprisonment, and Breen aud Adams to one month each.
