Commissionaires’ Corps
Sir, —I have noted with, interest several references io myself regarding the formation of the New Zealand Corps of Commissionaires, Personally I feel the time is not ripe to rush to the Press, as my one intention from the’outset was to do it, not say it. The ground covered during the past few weeks has been enormous, and it is about to bear fruit, inasmuch as several men are about to commence duty in the city within a day or two. I should like to say that all personages whom I have approached have not only given me their moral support, but kindly passed me on to other authority for similar treatment. Arrangements have been made with * leading tailor to place five suitable men in the uniform of the corps by Saturday next; these men are stepping into jobs immediately. The War Relief Association has been the means of assisting men to purchase uniforms; each man is treated on his merits, and a sum of money granted accordingly. After agreeing that the scheme is really worth while in everyway. it should be possible for us to obtain an office and telephone or some suitable quarters to enable intending employers to interview commissionaires with a view to employment. The response to the call for the required type of men has been astounding, but the support extended to the corps by persons of authority representing -.leading business concerns proves convincingly that the demand is equal to the supply. I must, of course, point out that permanent positions cannot possibly be found for all members, as much of the work available will be of a casual nature. A wages tariff has been drawn up, and each member will be of necessity acquainted with this before employment is offered. The assistance afforded me by Capt. A. A. Monks and Sgt.-Major J. W. Roy has been much appreciated. I cannot speak too highly of the constant and untiring efforts, working long hour* and under adverse conditions most.cheerfully, for the sole purpose of promoting a corps which it is hoped will be a lasting service to the community.—l am, etc,. .
H. G; FAULDS. Chief Commissionaire. Wellington, November 1.
