FISHING SEASON OPENS
Tokaanu and Taupo Anglers Secure Good Catches TROUT IN GOOD CONDITION Dominion Special Service. Tokaanu, November 1. The Tongariro River, Tokaanu, and Lake Taupo fishing season opened this morning with many a keen angler awaiting 1 the opening hour, numerous anglers from many parts of the North Island being present. The best catch was secured by Mr. John Selby at the Delta Camp on the fly, all before breakfast, the limit of 15 fish being secured, the largest turning the scale at 1011 b. The average was 6J!b. Other anglers at Asher’s Hotel and Fishing Lodge report good bags, and the general opinion is that the sport is better to-day than on corresponding openings. The mild winter has had the beneficial effect of the fish returning to the lake some six weeks sooner than usual. Consequently some exceptionally fine fresh-run fish have been landed in the Tongariro River. Light showers of warm rain have just set in, and should benefit the fishing. An abundance of feed is apparent almost everywhere, particularly around The Stump Bay and other small bays about the Tongariro River mouth. The fish are generally in good condition for so early in the season.
■ Many visitors are expected over the week-end, and the overseas bookings are the best for some years.
