Preferred to Prison Term ESCAPEE BEFORE COURT > By. Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, November 1. A request that.he be Hogged instead of forfeiting any remission of the sentence be is now serving was made by I Charles Hayward, who, with Harris O’Neill, was brought before his Hon- ‘ our Mri Justice Smith to-day for sen- [ fence for escaping ,from the Mount I Eden Gaol and stealing clothing. I His Honour said that he must impose a thoroughly deterrent sentence. O’Neill would be sentenced;to ; three years’ hard labour, and Hayward to two years, the terms to be served after their present sentences. Hayward: I have lost any remission i of my present sentence through this act. If it lies in your power, your Honour, I would sooner take a Hogging and leave the sentence as it is. His Honour: No, I cannot do that.
