Vacuum Products Building UAa I | T 71 : --r~ .4 ■■ ■" *>« I '..4aQ: Lilt .---ill ' Slliififi \•• ■ ’ * Architects and Structural Engineers: I. G. West, Son. and Hornibrook, A.A.N.Z.1.A., L.R.1.8.A., A.M.1., Struct. B. ' Palmerston North and Gisborne. An invention that has already proved its worth to the New Zealand dairy farmer, that of the vacuum packing process, has moved its headquarters from Hawera to Palmerston North, . and the above building, situated in Fitzherbert Avenue, has been designed to deal with the output of some of the factors operating in the Manawatu. The building itself, modelled on the latest type of continental architecture, was erected by Mr. A. EL Holmes, of Mere Mere Avenue, Palmerston North, a building contractor who has erected several business blocks in the city. With a frontage of fifty-five feet on Fitzherbert Avenue, the Vacuum Products building, and its terra-cotta and cream-tinted concrete walls, is a valuable addition to the city business area. Erected on earth-quake-resisting lines, in reinforced concrete, the building has a depth of 140 feet, of which space the offices, employees’ rooms and storerooms cover the full length of the front, with the factory itself occupying a total of 6,600 square feet. The Electrical Fittings The well-known firm of Messrs. Holben and Hubbard Ltd., of Rangitikei Street, Palmerston North, were the specialists entrusted with the installations of the electric light, power points, and the connecting of the electric motor that supplies the various machines with their motive power. In a factory of the nature of' the Vacuum Products’, where electricity is so extensively used, precision and care is essential to achieve the maximum of efficiency, and in this respect Messrs. Holben and Hubbard’s electricians, all of whom are highly skilled tradesmen, carried out their duties efficiently. The whole of the' building is fitted with an ample supply of electric light and power points, the lighting being arranged to illuminate the factory offices and the various other rooms to ensure a sufficiency of lighting, while, at the same time, every care has been taken to distribute the points evenly and eliminate glare. The Painting and Decorating One of the outstanding features of the building is the manner in which the plaster finish of the wall fronting the street has been toned in with the painting on the roof and windows, the painting and glazing part of the contract having been carried out by Messrs. M. K. Jordan, of 175 Featherston Street, Palmerston North, the firm who are also engaged on the painting of the new State Theatre, shortly to be opened in Palmerston North, and a number of modern better-class residences designed by local architects. The predominant colour of the paint on the office and store-room windows at the front of the building is a pleasing shade of green, with gold edgings to relieve the monotony and to add an appearance of quiet dignity eminently suitable for office suites. The building is exceptionally well ventilated and lighted by a large number of windows which were installed by Messrs. M. K. Jordan. Though simplicity is the keynote of the decorations on the Vacuum Products’ Building, the work has been efficiently executed, and is in keeping with the high standard called for by the architects.
