TEPID BATHS

City Council’s Inaction Regretted

“No progress has been made regarding tepid baths for Wellington, and it seems that very little can be expected from the City Council,” states the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, in its annual report. “The special committee appointed to deal with this subject decided that it should concentrate upon a pool only, leaving the erection of a building worthy of the city to posterity, and recommends further representations to the council to draw attention again to the necessity for properly equipped baths. At the same time it emphasises the disability under which we are placed in carrying out the object of the association under the worst possible conditions. While there is so much unemployment, it is unfortunate that the council refuses to take any action toward the erection of an institution, which is so necessary, and which would be appreciated by all lovers of clean sport. “As an illustration of the value of a tepid bath to a community, the point Is mentioned that whereas active competition does not commence locally until December, places such as Dunedin are able to conduct carnivals as early as September, when three New Zealand records were established this year.”
