PRODUCE MARKETING

Sale of New Zealand Butter LIMITATION BY LICENSE The Dairy Produce Board's proposal to adopt the policy of limiting by license the British firms engaged In the disposal of New Zealand butter and cheese was referred to by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson (Ind., Egmont) in a question be asked the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. Mr. Wilkinson said that the suggestion of such a policy had caused grave dissatisfaction among the dairy farmers, who remembered the losses they sustained when the previous attempt was made to impose impossible'conditions on those engaged in the disposal of the Dominion’s dairy produce. Mr. Wilkinson asked what action was being taken by the Government nominees on the Dairy Produce Board, if they were supporting this limitation policy, and whether they were reflecting the policy of the Government in the matter. He also asked if the Government would cause the board to hold the proposed policy in abeyance until those who fiesired to maintain freedom to dispose of dairy produce had had an opportunity to further consider the subject, and if necessarimake representations on the matter. “The Government,” Mr. Forbes replied, “is aware of this proposal of the Dairy Produce Board, which is the outcome of representations made to the board by the New Zealand Dairy Produce Importers’ Association of the United Kingdom. These representations included the suggestion that the board in consultation with the association issue licenses to importers. The Government is also aware of the fact that some objections have been raised to the board’s proposal. The Government nominees on the board have acted in accordance with their personal judgment. The Minister of Agriculture has already arranged to look further into the matter, and the board is not likely to take definite action in connection with it before it has been gone into. by the Minister.”
