Sino-Japanese Conflict (From “The Dominion,” October 17, 1308.) A conflict lasting several hours has occurred between Chinese and Japanese troops at Kantao, on the border of China and Northern Korea. It is feared that the conflict will lead to serious complications. The Japanese allege that the Chinese were the aggressors. Immediate satisfaction has been demanded at Peking by Japan. • * • O.ne million sterling of New Zealand bills, having one year’s currency, have begun to be placed on the London market, on a basis of about 3j per cent. Mr. Gandhi, who went to Natal in connection with the agitation against the Asiatic regulations of the Transvaal, was arrested on his return to Volksrust (on the Transvaal side of the border), and was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with hard labour, for refusing to give identification particulars required from him under the Registration Act. • * * Workmen of the Publie Works Department have been lining with slabs of marble the interior of the outer vault, in connection with the late Mr. Seddon’s grave on Observatory Hill. The interior of the vault was not finished before. The contractors for the monument which is to surmount the grave. Messrs. Edwards and Sons, have had the Coromandel granite, which is being used for the memorial. wrought at Auckland, where the requisite machinery is available, and only the reinforced concrete work and the erection of the monument will be done in Wellington. Mr. John Campbell. Government architect. leaves to-day for Auckland, to inspect the stonework, which will come south immediately, if approved. It is expected that the memorial will be erected within a few months’ time.
