A good deal of quiet but tremendous ly beneficial work is being done by the Bureau for Unemployed Women, which is conducted by a capable committee, under the direction of the Mayoress, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop. Yesterday morning a visit was paid to the bureau by his Excellency the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe, who were accompanied by Captain J. W. Tweedie, A.D.C. Their Excellencies were met by the Mayoress and Miss Kane, secretary of the executive. Members of the executive were also present. Their Excellencies were escorted through the establishment in Wakefield Street, and displayed a lively interest In what the committee was doing for unemployed women and children. In speaking to the women and girls who were present, his Excellency said it was gratifying to know that the numbers of unemployed had been reduced to such an extent. He commended the efforts that were being made at the bureau, and said that the occupations given them would make for a wider outlook and help them to be selfreliant in doing things for themselves, particularly in the needlework and handwork classes.
In speaking to the superintendent of the kitchen, his Excellency said he was glad to hear that the girls were being trained to appreciate and understand food values, and were being given lectures on similar lines. He hoped they would all obtain situations soon, and would look back with gratitude to what had been done for them at the bureau.
