Accidents During 1932 COMPENSATION PAYMENTS During 1932 the total number of reported accidents to workers in New Zealand factories was 2414, according to the annual report of the Department of Labour, which was presented to Parliament yesterday. Of this ’ number 2349 concerned males and 65 Forty of the accidents occurred to workers under 16 years of age, 373 to those between 16 and 20, and the remainder to people above that age. Of the five fatal accidents none was caused by or was due to machinery. The time lost by workers as a result of accidents was 47,170 days. In cases where the amount of compensation paid was known, namely, in 2398 cases, the total amount paid was £35,910. During the year ended March 31 last visits to the number of 5406 were made in the course of which wages-books were examined to see that the provisions of the Unemployment Act had been complied with in respect of the deduction of the emergency unemployment charge. Prosecutions numbered nine, in eight of which convictions were obtained. Awards and industrial agreements in force on March 31 last totalled 406 as against 445 on the corresponding day of last year. Dealing with th e work of Conciliation Commissioners and Councils of Conciliation, the report states that there were 47 disputes where recommendations were substantially accepted or agreements reached and referred to the court to make awards. There were 97 disputes in which no settlement was arrived at.
