HOUSE TO-DAY
Government Measures COMMITTEE STAGE Budget Next Week Judging by the brief second reading debates on the several Government Bills already on the Order Paper, they appear assured of a swift passage through ’the committee stage when the House of Representatives resumes to-day. Proposals of a much more contentious nature are contained in the private members’ Bills, which are due for consideration to-morrow and Thursday. , The Budget and Estimates are almost certain to make their appearance at the .beginning of next week. In the meantime the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, does not intend to force the pace of the House, but he indicated last evening that on the financial debate he would in all probability ask members to sit until midnight on Tuesday. Wednesday, and Thursday. The question of Monday sittings was not likely to arise until after the Budget debate had been disposed of. Speakers are allowed an hour to discuss the Financial Statement. Even with the evening sittings extended to midnight it is seldom that more'than six speakers have an opportunity to express their views. After the Budget debate is finished, there are the Estimates to consider, arid this usually requires two days a week for a month or so. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand Bill and the Companies Amendment Bill are ready for early presentation, and the Prime Minister is hopeful that it might be possible to make some progress with one or other of these measures before the commencement of the financial debate. ,
