DANGER IN THE ALPS.
There were 84 climbing accidents in the Alps last year, involving 111 fatalities. Imprudence and lack of training tieie re sponsible for about 50 per cent, ot the a jp; lle fatalities did not exceed 50 a year, but then—with the exception of 1928, when the number was down to 87— they have always been over 100 a year. The cause of tins increase has been an influx of inexperienced climbers, many of whom have refused to take advice from those who know bet er than themselves. The Swiss Alpine Club has done its best to tackle the problem by arranging special classes for beginners.
