FOUNDER OF SCOUT TROOP

Mr. William Mason’s Work Mr. William Mason, founder and original scoutmaster of the Lower Hutt Troop of Boy Scouts, with Mrs. Mason, was present at the Boy Scouts’ demonstration on Saturday afternoon, when his Excellency the GovernorGeneral presented the medal of merit and certificate to the First Lower Hutt and St. Augustine Petone Groups. • Old members of the First Lower Hutt Group stated yesterday how pleased they were to see “Pa,” together with the present G.S.M., going up to receive the honours on behalf of the group. “Pa” Mason was the founder and original scoutmaster of the troop up till June 18, 1923, when he handed control over to his successor, who still holds the position. This group is most fortunate in that it has only had two scoutmasters since its inception, and, particularly so, seeing that “Pa” has again been brought actively into the group as chairman of the Old Scouts’ Association, which was formed at the group reunion held on February 22. 1933. The present happy condition of the group owes much to “Pa” Mason for ilte real spade work done by him as scoutmaster, when at the same time he also held the position of district scoutmaster, then known as district commander.
