FAREWELL SERVICES
Good-bye to “Uncle George” The Rev. W. G. Carpenter delivered his farewell address from the pulpit of the Vivian Street Church of Christ yesterday. After the services he was the recipient of the good wishes of many of his congregation, who will formally tender him a farewell social this evening. The Rev. Mr. Carpenter, who is ‘‘Uncle George” of the 2YA radio station, also conducted his last children's broadcast service from the church last evening. There was a large attendance at the service, including Mr. Booth, the act-ing-station manager of 2YA, who voiced his appreciation, on behalf of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board and others, of the interest and enthusiasm which Mr. Carpenter had brought to bear on his work Sunday after Sunday at 2YA. Mr. Carpenter had officiated at these Sunday evening song services ever since the New Zealand Broadcasting Board controlled the station, and for years before that, and his ministrations to the children had been deeply appreciated, not only by the children, but by many adults. “May I express my regret at your departure,” said Mr. Booth. “I extend to you all good wishes for your future welfare, and for your success in your new sphere of activities.” Mr. Carpenter said he deeply appreciated Mr. Booth’s kindly wishes; also the letters he had received from the Broadcasting Board and from hundreds of listeners-in all over the country. He could not think of answering them all —there were far too many for that “Uncle George” is to leave for Auckland on Wednesday to take up his new duties at Onehunga.
