BIG DIVIDEND
Three-Figure Return at Avondale SUCCESS OF VERSANT Dominion Special Service. Auckland, October 15. A rare thrill was provided at Avondale races yesterday when a threefigure dividend was paid for a win, and double figures for a place when Versant won the Kingsland Highweight Handicap, in which he was tenth favourite in a field of eleven. Versant is owned by Mr. C. E. Parsons, of Auckland, and was ridden by its trainer, G. A. Holland, of Ellerslie. It was only the second time he had started in a race, and, although he had been doing good track work, even his own party did not seriously consider that he had a winning chance. Sight ten shilling tickets comprised the win investment on Versant and all were single purchases. One was a girl who had bought a ticket for her fiance, while another woman held a ticket. No large dividend is complete without Chinese participants, and two of .them shared in a ticket on Versant. A young Maori and four other men were the remaining ticket-holders. Versant’s dividend is the largest paid in Auckland for nearly ten years.
