SATURDAY’S SOCCER
Championship Final to Petone MARIST DEFEATED 5-3 The honour of being the champion Association football team in Wellington belongs to Petone, who defeated Marist in the final at the Kilbimie Stadium ou Saturday by 5 goals to 3. after a hard and interesting game. In the first spell, with the wind in their favour, Marist had the better of the argument, and at one stage were leading 2-0. In the second half, however, their forwards could not settle down, due no doubt to the fact that the team had not had a game for about six weeks. The teams were as follow:— Petone: McVean ; Kiddolls, Haines; White, Campbell. Smith; Dunlop, Watson, Leslie, Woods, Craig.. Marist: Tarkington; Mahoney, Duffy; Quirke, Hindle, Vaney; Barton, E. Kershaw, Condon, J. Kershaw, Marshment, •Petone kicked off into the wind, and all the early play was in their area. After 10 minutes a high ball was sent to Condon, who headed through, and continued to press. Marist bore down on their opponents. Quirke sending across to E. Kershaw, who scored with a beautiful low shot. Two goals down Petone rallied their forces', but Quirke and Mahoney were defending solidly. A freekick went to Petone for “hands, ’’ and Leslie scored direct with a hard drive 20 yards out. Leslie later drove a beautiful shot at goal, which Turkington only partially cleared, and Woods followed up to touch the ball into the net. Marist Forgo Ahead. Marist were able to forge ahead again when Campbell handled in the penalty area, and J. Kershaw found the net. Shortly after this the game was held up for nearly 10 minutes while a hole in front of the Petone goal was filled in. J. Kershaw was putting in some excellent work toward the end of the spell, ■when the score was 3-2 in favour of Marist. , . Several corners fell to each side m the second half, but both defences were difficult to pass., Condon was at times slowing up the Marist attack through trapping the ball and attempting to go through on his own, thereby enabling the opposition to come up. Turkington was bringing off some excellent saves, and Petone were unlucky when Dunlop’s shot just cleared the post. The equalising score came when Duffy handled and Campbell landed the penalty. Turkington had to work hard to hold another hot one shortly afterwards. But for one or two Marist attacks Petone were definitely on top. and .they strengthened their position when Leslie sent a beautiful centre to Woods, who headed into the net. The last goal came when the ball swung in from half-way, and Leslie put his foot out to score a rather flukey goal. The game ended: Petone 5, Marist 3. Trophies Presented. The Shield was presented to Craig, the Petone captain, by Mr. J. J. Roberts, president of the association, who congratulated both teams on their performance, remarking that the better team won.
