NEW DIRECTOR
Cawthron Institute
MR. T. RIGG APPOINTED

Mr. Theodore Rigg has been appointed Director of the Cawthron Institute in succession to Professor T. H. Easterfleld, who has retired. Mr. Rigg worked for a time at the Rothamsted experimental station under the guidance of Sir John Russell, and made extended visits to the Rowett Institute, Aberdeen, Cornell, and other American universities, gaining further experience. He acted as Director of the North Island soil reconnaissance survey during the first three years, and is the author of many papers dealing with soils, pastures, and fertilisers. The appointment was made by the unanimous decision -of the Cawthron Trust Board.
Mr. Rigg was educated at Newtown and at Wellington College and Victoria University College. . He took first-class honours in chemistry while engaged in the laboratory of the Agriculture Department, and gained an 1851 Exhibition scholarship. He graduated B.Sc. in 1910 and M.Sc. in 1911, and studied at Cambridge University. He took his B.A. degree for research in soils and crops. In the Great War he served on relief work in France and Serbia, and later in Poland and Russia.
