A scheme of using the waters of the old Ngaruroro River to irrigate 10,060 acres of the farm lands between the Tuki Tuki River and the Ngaruroro River at a capital cost of £lO,OOO, together with a subsidiary scheme of transforming the Old Ngaruroro into a lake and aquatic sports area over five miles in length, was submitted to the monthly meeting of the Hawke’s Bay County Council by Messrs. 11. C. Davies and A. T. Clark, registered surveyors, of Hastings. The council did not discuss the matter, the chairman, Mr. F. B. Logan, stating that it. was for the ratepayers concerned to petition the council. The balance between 10,600 acres and an area of 6600 acres proposed to be used as the actual area irrigated is 3400 acres, which it is suggested would be used for rotational and dry farming. Messrs. Davies and Clark estimate that the cost of the necessary mechanical equipment would be £-1000, the cost of constructing the channels and buying the land £6OOO. and the annual working expenses and interest £4500. The subsidiary scheme is estimated to cost £l5OO. Of the combined total capital cost of £11,500, a sum of £5OOO is represented by expenditure on labour. The proposed scheme does not include the Havelock North area recently brought forward as a potential irrigation area.
