Mildew’ stains can often be removed by moistening soft soap and starch with the juice of a lemon. Spread the paste over the mildew, lay out, and bleach. Afterwards wash.

Cretonnes may be washed with bran. Pour half a gallon of boiling water over Jib. of bran. Stand for some hours. Strain. Use when lukewarm without soap. Avoid rubbing the cretonnes, rinse in cold water, and iron with a not too hot iron.

Woodwork in your kitchen that has become stained from smoke and grease can be cleaned by painting it with a solution of starch in water. After the solution has dried it is rubbed oft’ with a soft brush or clean cloth, which removes the stains. Treating the woodwork in this way does not harm the paint, and any finished surface treated with stareli will remain in good condition for several jeara.

Before staining floors make certain they arc perfectly smooth, clean, and dry.

To remove varnish from linoleum surrounds, dip a large cork in oxalic acid and rub the linoleum with it. This will not remove the pattern.

Vacuum flasks should not be corked when stored after use. Rub the cork all over with common salt to prevent a musty flavour, washing it well before using the flask. If this is done no paper cover will be needed.
