DRUIDS’ MEETINGS

Coronation & Mewburn Lodges There was a large attendance of members and visitors at the last meeting of Coronation Lodge No. 26, U.A.0.D., over which A.D. Bro. C. Cooper presided. An official visit is to be paid to Melrose Lodge on September 19 to play for the Hawke Gup. It was decided to enter a team Sor the Fisher Cup, and to visit Pacific Lodge on its next lodge night to hear Bro. Bold, P.S. Thanks for the services rendered by P.A. Bro. F. E. Matthews to a brother of the Star of New Zealand Lodge while in hospital were received from the Star of New Zealand Lodge. P.A. Bro. Smithson’s report on the U.F.S. Dispensary was very encouraging. Bro. Mollison, P.S., reported that the Druids’ picnic committee had decided to hold the picnic on January 1 at Trentham racecourse. The lodge adjourned, after which Supt. P.A. Bro. Reeves and Ass. Supt. Bro. K. Orr, with members of Pioneer No. 1, were received to hear the lecture and see the demonstration given by P.A. Bro. F. E. Matthews on “The Science of Finger Prints. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Bro. Matthews, who will give a further lecture. A. vote of thanks was accorded the visitors, who responded by saying that they were very pleased to have been present on such an occasion. There was also a good attendance of members at the recent meeting of Mewburn Lodge No. 90, U.A.0.D., Karori. A.D. Bro. J. J. Brownlee, P.A., presided. The lodge decided to enter a cribbage team for the Fisher Cup, to be played for at the Pride of Brooklyn Lodge room on September 21. An invitation to attend Pacific Lodge on September 25 to hear a lecture by Bro. Bold, P.S., on “Druidism” was received. An invitation was also received from the Pride of Karori, 1.0.0. F., to attend their dance. P.A. Bro. F. E. Matthews reported on the cordiality extended to him when visiting Island Bay and Melrose Lodges. Clearances were granted with regret to P.D.P. Bro. E. Cole and P.A. Bro. A. J. Cathie to Excelsior Lodge. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the visitors. P.D.P. Bro. Ogilve, Island Bay, and V.A. Bro. A. E. Crawford, Melrose. At the close of business Bro. R. T. Grooby, with other members of Loyal Rbyde, G.U.1.0.0.F., were introduced to the A.D.

Later in the evening Mewburn Lodge met them as the first competitors for the Mewburn Shield, recently donated by Mrs. A. Mewburn on the tenth anniversary of the lodge for cribbage competition among the friendly societies in the Karori district. Mewburn Lodge were the victors in the initial game.
