AUSTRALIAN FLOODS
Rains in Southern Areas Sydney, September 2. Rains in South and Central New South Wales practically assure good wheat crops, which recent frosts and westerly winds had made doubtful. Frosts also in Victoria and South Australia have been heavy, but soaking rains minimised their effects. Floods are occurring in a number of localities. A motor-car was washed down tl)e Hutt River, near Claire, South Australia. Two children were drowned. The townships of Noarlunga and Port Denison are partly submerged. Sandbags are being used to keep the flood back at Underdale, a suburb of Adelaide. Rivers in Victoria are rising. Floods are already reported in a number of townships, and others are expected. Tlie Ovens River at Wangaratta rose to the 17-foot level, or one foot over the recognised danger level. Warnings have been issued in many places for people to evacuate low-lying spots.
