THE GRUMPTIOUS GIANT

A PORTMANTEAU-WOOD STORY The grumptious giant sat on the rockable hillock and gazed unhappfully at the distant wood. His mind was full of the troublem of what he should have for dinner. Something for dinner had been unfortunently short for many days, and the giant was hungrenous. In a grassful field near by a shepherd boy was keeping his flocks. “Do not get

day-dreaming and piping,” his master bad said, “or that outragesome giant will steal the sheep.” But the thoughtlent boy soon forgot all about the sheep, and two of the sillish animals wandered away. “Ha!” cried the eagerful giant. I see my scrumptable dinner approaching.” And he got up from the hillock and seized a sheep in each m htiless hand. He carried them back to his castle, and popped them into his roarclous oven. Then he licked his lips and sat down to wait. But in the field the forgetable boy awoke too late from his dreaming and found that the sheep were gone. He gathered the rest of his flock and went back to his master. “Alas, he said, “the horribllfying giant has stolen two of the sheep. I did all I could to defend them.” But his master beat him heavoughly. partly because he had lost the sheep and partly because he ha told such a disgracefaced lie about it. “You wickworthy boy,” he said. “X’ext time you lose any of my sheep Tshall send you myself to the dreadonous giant for his supper.
