The Junior Dominion
Dear Boys and Girls, I wonder if you have ever heard of a portmanteau word? Well, anyway, you have all heard about, and most of you have read, “Alice in Wonderland.” Lewis Carroll, who wrote “Alice in Wonderland,” loved making funny words, and “Alice Through the Looking Glass” is simply full of them. “It went gallumphing home,” he says. SGcdlumphing” is a portmanteau word because it is 'made up of the two words, “galloping” and “triumphing.” He took the “gall” from “galloping” and the “umphing” from triumphing, and joined them together. •
Do you see the idea? Well, when you read the story, “The Grumptious Giant,” which is on this page, all those funny weirds are portmanteau ones. There are. twenty altogether; see how many you can find. Then try to write a “portmanteau story yourself, with no fewer-than 'ten “portmanteau” words, made up of perfectly ordinary, everyday ones, in it. ' I have the address of a girl in San Francisco, Marion Glos, who'is tremendously anxious to hear all about Now Zealand from a penfriend. Her address is Marion Glos; 121 Palm .Avenue, San Francisco, California, U.S.A. I don’t expect she will mind how many letters she receives, but do make them really interesting. It is extraordinary to learn what strange ideas people have of New Zealand. “Wild Clover,” Hopelands, has sent me . another scrap book. lam just waiting for one or two late ones to arrive, then the small people in the Children’s Ward of the Hospital will have a wonderful surprise. Wouldn’t you all love to be there when the parcel is opened?
; Just a reminder about the Spring Page, next week. It’s going to be the joiliest page of the year, I think. Ever so much love to you all, League members,'from / KIWI.
