OBITUARY

| Mr; Archibald ‘ McNicol The death occurred with tragic suddenness yesterday at his home of Mr. Archibald M. McNieol, managing editor of the “Dannevlrke Evening News” for many years, arid ex-M;P. Yor Pahiatua, gays a Press Association message. He played a prominent part in the town district affairs' during thd, past 25 years, and > was universally ‘ respected. He leaves a widow and three daughters.'; ' z| ' ' Born in 1878;.Yhe late Mr, McNicol was educated in Dunedin. He adopted journalism as a career, and became mining reporter of the “Otago pajly Tinies.” Subsequently he was for many years on the staff of the Napier “Daily Telegraph,” of which paper he became chief reporter. In 1909 lip joined the “Dannevirke Evening News” as subeditor, and; very soon afterward assuihed the position of managing-editor. He took a keen interest in his profession and was a delegate from' New Zealand to the Imperial Press Conference held in London in 1930. He was also a director of the United Press Association. . Politics claimed Mr. McNicol’s attention at one time, and he /yas member for Pahiatua fr0m.1919 until 1922, being "defeated by the Minister of Lands, Hon. E. A; Ransom. He took an active interest in local affairs, and at one time was president of the Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce.

. The death took place last week at his residence,; Sefton Street, Wadestown. of Mr. T. L. Binney, ; secretary of tjib head office of the Commercial Bnion Assurance do., Ltd. Mr. Binney had occupied this position since 1929, and before that he was manager of the company at Auckland. Mr. Binney’s service with the Commercial Union extended over 28 years. He joined the Dunedin branch as a junior clerk In 1905. Deceased was attached to the. Artillery of the New Zealand Expedition-, ary Force, and saw considerable service Iri. France, his war services leaving effects from which he never fully recoveredjjln his younger days in Dunedin Mr; Binney was a prominent cricketer.
