OBITUARY

Mrs. J. A. Hannah MUCH BENEFICENT WORK Women’s organisations ami art circles throughout New Zealand will, in common with her large number of friends, deeply regret to. learn of the death yesterday evening of Mrs. Sybil Matid Hannah,' wife of Mr. James A. ■Hannah, of Wellington. The late Mrs. Hannah has been ill for a considerable period, and she passed away in her home at 3 Percival Street shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday evening. Mrs. Hannah was the daughter of ' Mrs. Johnson, of Wellington, and the late Captain Johnson. She- devoted the greater part of her life to a large number of , beneficent activities, and • was best known in connection with her work for the Wellington Plunket Society, of the executive committee of which she was a member. She had been ( directly and indirectly responsible for >a large part of the raising of money for the society, and was organiser and designer of many brilliant social events in aid of the society’s, funds. Mrs. Hannah’s interests in the arts have been also well known. She had been a member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, and at one time was on the council. She herself was an artist of no mean ability. She used to be arts mistress at Wellington Technical College, and was later a member of the board of governors. She received , her education at the Terrace School and Wellington Girls’- College. Various movements for the welfare of women and children claimed Mrs. Hannah’s interest and active support, and’until recently she was a member of the Wellington Free Kindergarten ;. Council. Most of her activities were necessarily stopped by her illness, but t . her keen personality and her kindness ' and generosity have always been well known. Mrs. Hannah’s husband is at present in Switzerland, having gone into a clinie there because of an illness. She leaves two children, Sheila, aged 16 years, and Anthony, aged 12. Mr. James Foreman Tlie death took place-at the homestead, Ponatahi, Carterton, oil Monday night of Mr. James F. F. Foreman, a well-known settler of the Wairarapa. The late Mr. Foreman, • who, was .72 years of age, was born in’ Wellington. He is survived by a widow and a family of five sons and five daughters. ■
