Celebrations to mark the diamond jubilee of the Westmere Presbyterian Church were held at the week-end. On Saturday afternoon there, was a large attendance in the Westmere Hall, when a most enjoyable social gathering was held. Among those present were the Rev. F. Barton, of Auckland; the Rev. C. Wait, of Turakina, formerly ministers of the. congregation; the Rev. D. Mclvor, of -Marton; and Canon W. G. Williams.; On Sunday there-was a crowded congregation at the jubilee service, which was conducted by the Rev. F. Barton. Profit on Charity Bail. The recent Wanganui charity: ball real--ised a profit of £lOl/1/7. which has been handed over to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. This amount is very gratifying, and reflects great credit on the'committee and those responsible for its organisation. Opening of Afforestation Camp. The Wanganui Youths’ Afforestation Camp at Kaitoke will be officially opened bn Saturday next by the Minister of Lands, the Hon. C. E. MacMillan. Prior to the opening cerecony a football match is to be played between boys' of the camp and a team from Flock House, who will be the guests of the cainp for the weekend. tin the evening a special forestry film is to be screened. Condition of Injured Men. The cyclist,- -Mr. J. Marsh, who was injured on Sunday afternoon, and taken to the Wanganui. Ptlublic Hospital, regained consciousness yesterday, but Ins condition is still considered serious. The two men who were injured when a lorry overturned, Mr. J. Young and Mr. C. S. Smith, are reported to be progressing satisfactorily. Orderly Preachers. -“On the occasion of the opening of the first Presbyterian Church at Westmere, on August 3, 1873, the Rev.. J. EJmslie, of St. 'Paul's, Wanganui, presented a pulpit Bible, which is still in use to-day,"’ said the Rev. A. H. Norrie,.when speaking at the Westmere Presbyterinn Church diamond jubilee celebrations. “The fact that it is still in a good state of preservation is a testimony to the quiet and orderly preachers who have attended the church; Unlike some of ■ the ancient Scottish preachers, .they did not flay the inside out of their pulpit Bibles with vigorous thumping while preaching.”
