TENNIS TEAMS

District Invitations DECISIONS OF N.Z. COUNCIL Disapproval of district tennis associations taking it , upon themselves to invite teams from overseas was expressed in a motion by Mr. L. A. Tracy, a Marlborough delegate,, at last evening’s annual general meeting of the council of the New Zealand Lawn Tenuis Association. , The motion read as follows: — “That this meeting of the council of the N.Z.L.T.A. disapproves of affiliated district associations inviting tennis teams outside New Zealand to play In New Zealand, and that the incoming management committee be instructed to refuse all such applications.”. . New Zealand was a separate nation. Mr., Tracy said, and all invitations should be issued by the national body. When tours were handled by oue body only, outside associations knew whom they were dealing with, and there was no confusion. The management committee, Mr. Tracy considered, was in the position to secure the best teams and the longest visits. Mr. P. Harrison (Auckland) said that his association had control over a wide area of ground that could not be covered by local players. Auckland had invited a team from Australia last season, and it .had played in twenty country towns. A team covering the whole of New Zealand could not possibly do this. He thought that if a district was prepared to take the risk of financial loss, it was not doing any harm. Mr. N. A. Foden (Poverty Bay anef East Coast) thought the matter should be postponed for full ' consideration later, and on the chairman, Mr. A. G Henderson, agreeing with him, it was decided to hold the motion over till the next quarterly meeting. The following motion, moved by Mr. G. H. Pownall (Wanganui), was carried unanimously: “That a report as to the desirability or otherwise of holding a national hard-court championship be prepared by the management 'committee, and presented at the next quarterly meeting of the council.” A motion, that it be an instruction to the management committee to arrange for the holding of the junior hardcourt championships annually, was moved by Dr. A. E. Park (Auckland) and carried. A further proposal by Dr. Park, that such tournament be held in the May school holidays, was also carried. “That the intermediate champion ship is undesirable and should be abolished,” was moved by Mr. H. N. Watson (Manawatu) and carried. The question of the amount of the annual subscriptions to be paid by affiliated associations to the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association for the year 1933-1934 was left to the management committee, with instructions to bring forward a recommendation co the next quarterly meeting of the council.
