German Rearmament ANTI-AUSTRIAN POLICY Demonstration in the Saar By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, August 26. France believes that Hitler’s antiAustrian campaign will not cease without strong international action, which France will see applied if the League finds a drastic remedy necessary. Nobody in France doubts that Germany is rearming. Several dependable French newspapers detail reports that Germany’s manufacturers are engaged in making bombing aeroplanes, heavy artillery, and gas. and also that they are approaching the completion of the mechanisation of the Reichswehr and the militarisation of police and Storm Troops. It is significant that they should continue to be kept busy. The Chamber of Deputies recently passed a Bill adjusting recruiting so as to maintain the army at normality during the lean years of 1935-38, due to the low birth-rate in war time. France is ” watching closely two monster Nazi demonstrations at Bingen and Niederwald. These are regarded as Hitler’s first public move in a campaign to win back the Saar for Germany. “BACK TO GERMANY” Hitler Visits the Saar District Cologne, August 27. Herr Hitler and Herr von Papen | flew from Tannenberg to attend a great demonstration by the Saar League at Ruedesheim. Speaking at the foot of the 1870 war monument, Herr Hitler declared s that back to Germany represented the only way for the people of tire Saar. The Germans desired an understanding with France on all questions, but would never renounce the Saar, as the Saar would never abandon Germany. The Marxists who betrayed Germany had been expelled. President Hindenburg telegraphed asserting the inextinguishable connection of the German Saar district with Germany. Communists held counter demonstrations at Saarbrucken and Neunkirchen. INDEPENDENT AUSTRIA French Premier’s Assurance Paris, August 27. “We are determined to guarantee the independence of Austria. Small Powers have the same right to a free life as stronger countries,” said the French Premier, M. Daladier, prior to his departure on a tour of inspection of the new frontier defences.
