Dominion Championship INTERESTING 'POSITION When play in the inter-island telegraphic match for the club championship of the Dominion ceased on July 31, the score was Wellington 3, Otago 3, with 14 games left unfinished. The Wellington total consisted of a win by Mr. A. T. Craven, and draws by Messrs. W. J. Fairburn, J. Olto, 11. E. Ashby and Dr. D. F. Myers. As a result of friendly negotiations between the two clubs during the past fortnight agreement has been reached regarding ten of the 14 outstanding games. Wins for the Wellington C.C. are scored by Messrs. F. K. Kelling, W. White, J. C. McCrea, A. E. Jessup, and J. L. Hardy, and for the Otago C.C. by Messrs. J. B. Dunlop, A. J. McDermott, A. Ward,and Dr. Merrington. The game between 11. G. Didsbury (Wellington) and W. Lang (Otago) is a draw. The former can win a pawn, but cannot escape from a perpetual check. Sixteen games are now accounted for, the tally to date being Wellington Bi, Otago 74. The positions reached, in the remaining four games are to be adjudicated on by the Auckland members of the New Zealand Adjudication Board. The match may result in a win for cither side by one game, or it may end in a tie (10-10). Mr. Edwin A. Hicks, the champion of the Wellington Chess Club, was prevented by illness from taking part in this match. He is making good recovery from an operation. Cliampion of Cluunpions. The contest which is being held under the auspices of the Wellington Chess League for the champion of champions title has been advanced a further stage during the past fortnight. _ Mr. J. Morton (Wadestown C.C.), who is in fine form this year, scored a. win from Mr. G. 1. Anderson, the present holder of the trophy, and drew his game with Mr. A. M. Gyles, who won this contest seven years in succession. The. tallies of the seven competitors are now as follow: —

A feature of this year’s competition is the strong play of Mr. W. White, the Brooklyn representative, who is also making a good showing in the current tourney for the championship of the Wellington Chess Club. Mr. Gyles, who is in second place, him yet to play Messrs. G. P. Anderson and Kelling. Only three of the competitors can equal Mr. White's good total, and to do this they must win all their remaining games. Two of Mr. E. A. Hicks’s games are in arrear owing to his illness. B Grade Competition. The sixth round of the 'Wellington Chess League's B grade teams’ tourney was completed last week, when a hardfought contest between the M ellington Chess Club’s No. 1 team and the Hutt Valley Chess Club ended in a tie, as fol'°"S Wellington.
