New Stamp Issue
Sir, —It is quite evident that your correspondent “Satisfied” is lacking in artistic ability. Consequently his latter, which appeared in your issue of August 17, may be passed over. However, the criticism that has been levelled at the Bd. value, depicting a Tuatara lizard, is unjustifiable. The design is very well conceived and beautifully drawn, and it is no fault of the artist, surely, that this unique little reptile is rather ferocious-looking. I consider the only designs worthy of reproduction in their present form are the four in the larger size, all of which are excellent, and the 3d., Bd., 9d. and 1/- values in the smaller. Each one of these would he a credit to the country. To me it matters little whether the stamps illustrate kiwis, cows, or yawning chasms, as long as the designs are wellbalanced and artistically drawn, which many are not. Because of the last-men-tioned fault in particular, the Id., lid., 2d., 4d. and 6d. designs should be definitely rejected.—l am, etc. _ ‘ STAMPS. Wanganui, August 20.
