DUTY ON CARPETS
Request for Reduction TARIFF INVESTIGATION By Telegraph.—-Press Association. Auckland, August 21. Abolition or substantial reduction of the duty on British carpets was sought by Mr. H. T. Merritt in evidence before the Tariff Commission to-day. He also sought tlie removal of the duty on composite backed rubber flooring if made in Britain, and the retention of the present duty if the goods are made in foreign countries or Australia. In reply to Professor Murphy, Mr. Merritt said he would not in principle differentiate between Australia and Britain in tariff matters. , Mr. J. B. Gow: If the United Kingdom receives our products freely and Australia cuts them out, will that have any bearing on the matter? “That is the position,” Mr. Merritt replied. He added that he was loath to take any arbitrary action against a member of one big family.
